Dear Editor,I read the article titled “Aesthetic management of gum hyperpigmentation by a simple technique” by Singhal A and Deepa D.[1] The work done was commendable. It is necessary to note here that recording the smile of a patient is necessary before he/she undergoes gingival depigmentation. There are possibilities of a gummy smile in the patient after orthodontic treatment, which may require correction after or during the orthodontic treatment.[23] The pigmentation becomes an aesthetic problem when it gets revealed on smiling and when the color of the gingiva is not similar to the skin color of the patient.[4]Scalpel surgery, electrocautery, cryosurgery, and lasers are the procedures used for gingival depigmentation. Recently, used lasers and cryosurgery seem to be better choices when intraoperative comfort, postoperative healing, and repigmentation are taken into consideration. When laser is considered, the diode laser is a better choice for depigmentation.[5]
