Abstract
BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour after childbirth. In developing countries alone, early initiation of breastfeeding could save as many as 1.45 million lives each year by reducing deaths mainly due to diarrheal disorders and lower respiratory tract infections in children. The current study aimed to determine the rate and the predictors of breastfeeding initiation in East Wollega Zones of West Ethiopia.Entities:

Independent variables entered in the initial model: sex of child, maternal age, mother’s occupation, owner radio/TV, maternal education, wealth index, colostrum feeding, advise, and prelacteal feeding. [d.f.13 Wald chi square value:35.034 (p < 0.001); Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit test: 0.456]. Model 1: mother’s occupation, owner radio/TV, colostrum feeding, advice, and prelacteal feeding. [d.f. 5; Wald chi square value; 32.315 (p < 0.000); Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit test: 0.611]. Maternal characteristics examined as control variables included age and education. We also adjusted for sex of child in the analyses
