Abstract
BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis, a spirochaetal zoonosis, occurs in diverse epidemiological settings and affects vulnerable populations, such as rural subsistence farmers and urban slum dwellers. Although leptospirosis can cause life-threatening disease, there is no global burden of disease estimate in terms of Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) available. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPALEntities:

* WHO regions are further subdivided into subregions. A: very low child, very low adult mortality; B Low child, low adult mortality; C: Low child, high adult mortality; D: High child, high adult mortality; E: High child, very high adult mortality. List of countries in each subregion is given in S1 File.

*A higher burden of rabies was estimated by Hampson et al. [30], due to variations in methodology and estimates of mortality rates.
