Abstract
BACKGROUND: Eclampsia and pre-eclampsia are well-recognized causes of maternal and neonatal mortality in low income countries, but are never studied in a district hospital. In order to get reliable data to facilitate the hospital's obstetric audit a retrospective medical record study was performed in Ndala Hospital, Tanzania.Entities:

Definitions
| Definition | Inclusion criterion?a | |
|---|---|---|
| Hypertension | diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg or systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg | |
| Severe hypertension | diastolic BP ≥ 110 mmHg or systolic BP ≥ 160 mmHg | |
| Hypertensive crisis | diastolic BP ≥ 120 mmHg or systolic BP ≥ 180 mmHg | |
| Mild pre-eclampsia | Proteinuria WITH: | No |
| -Hypertension WITHOUT signs or symptomsb | ||
| Severe pre-eclampsia | Proteinuria WITH: | Yes |
| -Hypertension AND signs, OR | ||
| -Severe hypertension | ||
| Eclampsia | Hypertension | Yes |
| Proteinuria | ||
| Convulsions |
aThe hospital protocol categorises hypertension in hypertension, severe hypertension and hypertensive crisis. If a definite diagnosis could not be made due to absent or unreliable data on proteinuria, the diagnosis made by the clinician was used to determine inclusion in this study
bSigns: oedema, signs of clotting disorder, jaundice. Symptoms: headache, epigastric pain, nausea
