PD-1 is highly upregulated on Treg cells as well as Teff cells during chronic pathogen infection. PD-1:PD-L1 interactions between Teff cells and pathogen-infected cells or between Treg cells and Teff cells provide Teff cell exhaustion signal or Treg cell potentiation signal, thereby attenuating immunopathology.
