Abstract
BACKGROUND: Reference diagnostic tests for leptospirosis include nucleic acid amplification tests, bacterial culture, and microscopic agglutination testing (MAT) of acute and convalescent serum. However, clinical laboratories often do not receive paired specimens. In the current study, we tested serum samples using a highly sensitive real-time nucleic acid amplification test for Leptospira and compared results to MAT performed on the same specimens. 1 65 samples tested positive for Leptospira in the Lepto-MD assay and/or by MAT; 3 samples tested positive by both methods.
Comparison of Leptospira results for 478 serum samples tested with the Lepto-MD assay and MAT using titer thresholds for a positive result of ≥1:800 (definition of a confirmed case, ≥1:100, and ≥1:1,600.
