Abstract
Current global challenges require solutions that cannot be delivered by any one field alone. New developments in the analysis and interpretation of plant-derived climatic records bridge traditional disciplines, advancing understanding of phenomena of great ecological and societal significance, specifically, those related to changes in the terrestrial water cycle. Keywords: climatic change; drought; human–environment systems; socioecology; soil–plant–atmosphere interactions; stable isotopes; water-use efficiency
