Abstract
The width and curvature of the collagen and elastin fiber bundles in the human pulmonary interalveolar septa and alveolar mouths are measured. The data, together with the known mechanical properties of collagen and elastin fibers, are used to derive the incremental elastic moduli of the lung tissue. The constitutive equation for small incremental stress and strain superposed on a homeostatic inflated lung is linear and isotropic, and characterized by two material constants.Entities:
