Abstract
BACKGROUND: While metabolic syndrome has been strongly implicated as a risk factor for macrovascular diseases, such as stroke and cardiovascular disease, its relationship with microvascular diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, has been less defined. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the association between metabolic syndrome and the presence and severity of diabetic retinopathy.Entities:

Figure 1The frequency of metabolic syndrome and its components.
Notes: Metabolic syndrome and all of its components were seen more frequently in diabetics compared to nondiabetics (P<0.0001). However, metabolic syndrome was not predictive of the presence or severity of diabetic retinopathy.
Abbreviations: BMI, body mass index; DR, diabetic retinopathy; FPG, fasting plasma glucose; HDL, high-density lipoprotein; HTN, hypertension; NPDR, nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy; PD, proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
