Abstract
Managing the unwell child can be a frightening experience for everyone involved. As GPs become more involved in delivery of care in Urgent Care Centres and Emergency Units, it is more likely that they will come across a child who is sicker than those attending the surgery. This article will help the GP and the rest of the team to be prepared for this situation - to identify the unwell infant or toddler, to know general management principles and some specific treatment pathways for common emergencies and to take steps to try and prevent children becoming critically ill wherever possible. Local management pathways may vary so please refer to your local guidelines. Advice from national bodies such as the UK Resuscitation Council, the Advanced Life Support Group and the British National Formulary for Children has been included. Please revisit these resources for updated material.Entities:
