Abstract
BACKGROUND: Neck circumference, as a predicator of obesity, is a well-known risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea and cardiovascular diseases. However, little research exists on neck length associated with these factors. This study explored the association of neck length with sleep and cardiovascular risk factors by measuring midline neck length (MNL) and lateral neck length (LNL).Entities:

Figure 1Landmark and reference line for neck length. MNL was measured from the upper margin of the hyoid bone to the jugular notch. LNL was measured from the mandibular angle to the mid-portion of the ipsilateral clavicle. MNL: midline neck length, LNL: lateral neck length.
Baseline characteristics of the subjects
Values are presented as mean ± SD or number (%). Sleep apnea means as stop breathing ≥ once a week.
*Calculated by t-test or chi-square test.
The relationship between snoring patterns and neck lengths
P-value was calculated by t-test.
MNL: midline neck length, LNL: lateral neck length, HML: length of mandible to hyoid bone.
*MNL height ratio is calculated by formula as (MNL/height × 100). †LNL height ratio is calculated by formula as (LNL/height × 100). ‡HML is calculated by LNL minus MNL.
The relationship between sleep apnea and neck lengths
P-value was calculated by t-test. Sleep apnea means the individual stops breathing during sleep ≥ once a week.
The relationship between sleep pattern and neck lengths
P-value was calculated by t-test or analysis of variance test.
MNL: midline neck length, LNL: lateral neck length.
*MNL height ratio is calculated by formula as (MNL/height×100). †LNL height ratio is calculated by formula as (LNL/height×100).
The relationship between cardiovascular risk factors and neck lengths
P-value was calculated by t-test.
MNL: midline neck length, LNL: lateral neck length.
*MNL height ratio is calculated by formula as (MNL/height × 100). †LNL height ratio is calculated by formula as (LNL/height × 100).
