Abstract
The autocatalytic self-reproduction of micelles and vesicles has been studied for several decades. These systems are vital components of certain protocell models and some models for how life may have begun from mixtures of simple chemicals. Here we discuss our recently described autocatalytic systems where self-reproducing micelles are driven by bond-forming reactions. These systems generate increased complexity on both the molecular level, through covalent bond formation, and the supramolecular level, through spontaneous self-assembly into functional aggregates. This provides the conceptual basis for novel studies of the potential roles of self-reproducing lipid aggregates in the prebiotic world.Entities:
