Adjusted model included sex, race/ethnicity, age, poverty status, type of insurance, perceived physical and mental health status, and number of co-occurring chronic conditions (reported having 1 of the following chronic conditions: asthma, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, thyroid disease, anxiety, depression). Percentage expenditures associated with chronic condition combinations were estimated by exponentiating the regression coefficients of dummy variables and subtracting 1 (ie, percentage difference = eβ−1).

Based on 9,296 adults who were aged 21 years or older, alive during the calendar years, and reported having at least 2 of the following chronic conditions: arthritis, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and hypertension.
Out-of-pocket expenditures burden was calculated as the ratio of out-of-pocket spending to personal income and expressed as a percentage, with out-of-pocket burden varying from 0 to 100. High out-of-pocket expenditures burden is the spending of 10% or more of personal income on health-related services.
