Abstract
This article summarises the epidemiology of cataract, the normal and altered physiology of the eye's lens, and the causes of and risk factors associated with the condition. It outlines the aims of modern cataract surgery and discusses the main surgical approaches. The effects of 'cataract blindness' on the patient's quality of life are addressed, with particular reference to the negative effect of the onset of depression. The role of the nurse in promoting quality of life is explored with reference to the value of psychosocial theory in the care of and promotion of health to older patients with cataracts.Entities:
