Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To describe a modified meatoplasty for external auditory canal stenosis with endoaural-conchal incision. STUDY
DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study.
SETTING: Tertiary referral hospital. PATIENTS: There were 140 patients (145 ears) who had undergone surgical correction for external auditory canal stenosis from 2003 to 2010. INTERVENTION: The modified meatoplasty with endoaural-conchal incision was used to correct the external auditory canal stenosis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The postoperative complications and the incidence of restenosis.
RESULTS: Almost all the patients obtained satisfied effect. There were no severe complications, such as facial nerve injury, skin flap necrosis, sensorineural hearing loss, or intractable otorrhea. Restenosis occurred in two cases (1.38%).
CONCLUSION: The described technique is a reliable method for treating external auditory canal stenosis and reconstructing the tympanic membrane. The result is stable, functionally adequate, and cosmetically acceptable. It provides a new choice for surgical treatment of external auditory canal stenosis, especially of the congenital case.
