Jaakko Pohjoismäki1, Jere Kahanpää2.

Abstract

An updated checklist of the superfamilies Oestroidea and Hippoboscoidea recorded from Finland is presented. The checklist covers the following families: Calliphoridae, Rhiniidae, Sarcophagidae, Rhinophoridae, Tachinidae, Oestridae and Hippoboscidae.

Introduction

is a large and diverse superfamily of flies with a variety of life history strategies ranging from saprophages to parasitoids or endoparasites, sometimes even within the family. Some groups, such as certain subfamilies of the , have also significant veterinary, medical and economical impact. are regarded as monophyletic clade, however the same does not apply to the family of within (Marinho et al. 2012). Besides , currently includes PageBreaksix other monophyletic families: , , , , and the non-finnish . Additionally, the subfamilies of (, ) are sometimes treated as full families. contains the louse flies as well as the tropical or tsetse flies. is divided to the mammal or bird parasitic louse flies () and batflies (, ). Although batflies have been treated as full families, they seem to be subordinate to the other (Kutty et al. 2010). The checklist will therefore follow the family division of Pape et al. 2011. While world catalogues has been published for (Pape 1996) and (Dick 2006) only regional (Herting and Dely-Draskovits 1993) or genus-level (O’Hara 2012) catalogues exist for the other oestroid and hippoboscoid families. The Finnish species of and were last listed by Hackman (1980). The sarcophagid checklist was updated by Pape (1987a,b) and the calliphorids by Rognes (1991). The updated checklists for , and follow the taxonomic order of Pape (2001), Herting (1993) and Herting and Dely-Draskovits (1993), respectively. Number of species by family.
