Abstract
OPINION STATEMENT: With the advent of increasingly available antiretroviral therapy (ART), the life expectancy of HIV-infected persons is increasing. As they age, HIV-infected persons have increased propensity to typical diseases of aging including cardiovascular disease and accelerated atherosclerosis. The pathogenesis of HIV-associated atherosclerosis is complex and involves a state of chronic inflammation, exposure to traditional risk factors, and metabolic side effects of ART. Treatment of HIV-associated atherosclerosis should include special attention to drug-drug interactions and is best accomplished by a multidisciplinary team experienced in the care of HIV-infected persons.Entities:
