Abstract
BACKGROUND: Danish general practitioners (GPs) answer all calls to the out-of-hours primary care service. About 60% of the calls are terminated on the telephone through provision of medical advice and prescription of medication. Nevertheless, little is known about the prescription patterns of telephone consultations, such as prescription frequency and indications for drug use. Our aim was to examine the characteristics of patients and GPs in telephone consultations resulting in drug prescription.Entities:

1Prescriptions sums add up to more than the total number of contacts as some contacts resulted in more than one prescription.
2Prescription renewals excluded.
3Test of difference between contact groups involving prescription of medication (using Fishers exact for severity due to few observations).
Prevalence of prescriptions* based on telephone consultation and prevalence ratio (PR) adjusted for patient gender and age group, type of contact (new episode or exacerbation of chronic disease), GP gender and age group, and GP-assessed severity of health problem
