Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the hypothesis that pentraxin 3 (PTX3) can have a diagnostic value for predicting anatomical complexity of coronary artery stenosis as measured by the Synergy between PCI with Taxus and Cardiac Surgery (SYNTAX) score. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We investigated the association of systemic arterial PTX3 with SYNTAX score among 500 patients with ischemic heart disease assigned to medical treatment (251), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (197), or coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) (52).Entities:

Baseline characteristics of the participants across quartiles of the SYNTAX score
*Values are presented as median (IQR) for continuously distributed variables except for ejection fraction where values are presented as mean (SD). For categorically distributed variables, values are presented as frequency (%), †p were obtained from a series of logistic regression models and a series of Kruskal-Wallis tests for categorically- and continuously-distributed variables, respectively. SYNTAX: Synergy between percutaneous coronary intervention with Taxus and Cardiac Surgery, CRP: C-reactive protein

Additional predictive power for complex coronary artery stenosis* conferred by the systemic arterial levels of pentraxin 3
*Complex coronary stenosis was defined as a SYNTAX score ≥23, †Obtained from Cox proportional hazard regression model with time at risk presumed to be constant to all of the participants, ‡-2 Log Likelihood, §Differences greater than 10 were considered to be significant, ¶Cutpoints were set at 0.25 and 0.50. AIC: Akaike information criterion, BIC: Bayesian information criterion, EF: ejection fraction, IDI: integrated discrimination improvement index, NRI: net reclassification improvement index, SYNTAX: Synergy between PCI with Taxus and Cardiac Surgery, CI: confidence interval
