Abstract
BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder is one of the most disabling of all psychiatric illnesses. Despite available pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments about 10% of patients remain severely affected and are considered treatment-refractory. For some of these patients deep brain stimulation offers an appropriate treatment method. The scope of this article is to review the published data and to compare different target structures and their effectiveness.Entities:

ALIC: anterior limb of the internal capsule. Responders’ ratio: responders defined as 35% improvement in Y-BOCS score or more. Follow-up: latest follow-up reported. Patients included elsewhere: Number of patients of which the data has been reported before and corresponding publication. Y-BOCS reduction: mean reduction for new patients at latest follow-up or reduction range if individual data not available. *Data not included in pooled means due to missing information/republished data.
