Abstract
The ways to compute the kinematics and dynamic quantities of human bodies in motion have been studied in many biomedical papers. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of 3D human motion editing and synthesis techniques. Firstly, four types of methods for 3D human motion synthesis are introduced and compared. Secondly, motion capture data representation, motion editing, and motion synthesis are reviewed successively. Finally, future research directions are suggested.Entities:

Comparison of motion synthesis methods.
| Motion synthesis methods | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| Manual methods | (1) Have the largest control of the generated motion | (1) Laborious and time consuming and require the animator to have rich experience |
|
| ||
| Physics-based methods | (1) Significantly decrease the time of manual adjustment | (1) Difficult to use when producing smooth and emotional movements, such as dancing and sneaking |
|
| ||
| Video-based methods | (1) Require simple data acquisition | (1) Require a single background for acquisition |
|
| ||
| Motion capture data-driven methods | (1) Can generate realistic and smooth motion | (1) Entail high costs for motion capture equipment |
