Abstract
Subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) is well established for the treatment of the motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the effect of STN DBS on autonomic symptoms has not been well studied. We examined 19 patients undergoing STN DBS for PD. The patients were administered a questionnaire to evaluate the pre-operative and post-operative autonomic function. All patients reported a significant post DBS improvement of one or more symptoms of the autonomic dysfunction (urinary and gastrointestinal function). In particular, we have shown the most significant improvement in the urinary function after STN DBS. Further larger studies are required with respect to the effect of STN DBS on the autonomic function.Entities:
