Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in South Korea have been organizing hepatitis B virus (HBV) vertical infection prevention projects since July 2002. In this single-institute study, the results of surveys conducted in target mothers who delivered babies in a tertiary hospital were investigated and analyzed.Entities:

Prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen-positive mothers at Gachon University Gil Medical Center from July 2002 to December 2012
Values are presented as number (%).
HBsAg, hepatitis B surface antigen.
Immunoprophylaxis failure rate in infants from hepatitis B surface antigen-positive mothers
HBsAg, hepatitis B surface antigen.
Baseline characteristics of hepatitis B virus-positive mothers by year
Normal range: total bilirubin (0.2-1.2 mg/dL), aspartate aminotransferase (AST; 10-40 IU/L), alanine aminotransferase (ALT; 5-40 IU/L), alkaline phosphatase (35-123 IU/L), prothrombin time (PT; 9.2-13.4 seconds).
NC, not checked.
aNot all hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive mothers were examined. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA titers were measured in only 27 mothers. The figure in parentheses is the number of people that were examined.
bNot all HBsAg-positive mothers were examined; 159 mothers were tested for hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positivity or -negativity, and 60 mothers were HBeAg-positive as well as HBsAg-positive.
cResults are mean (standard deviation).
Characteristics of the mothers of hepatitis B surface antigen-positive neonates
Capital letter indicates the mother of each neonate (small letter).
HBeAg, hepatitis B e antigen; HBV, hepatitis B virus; AST, aspartate aminotransferase; ALT, alanine aminotransferase; PT, prothrombin time; U/S, ultrasonography; +, positive; NC, not checked.
Characteristics of hepatitis B surface antigen-positive neonates from hepatitis B surface antigen-positive mothers
Small letter indicates the neonate of each mother (capital letter).
HBeAg, hepatitis B e antigen; HBV, hepatitis B virus; AST, aspartate aminotransferase; ALT, alanine aminotransferase; PT, prothrombin time; U/S, ultrasonography; +, positive; -, negative; NC, not checked.
