Figure 1Possible mechanisms of generation of new β‐cells in the adult pancreas. Pancreatic β‐cell mass in the adult is maintained primarily by self‐replication of pre‐existing β‐cells. However, the β‐cells can also be generated by neogenesis from unidentified stem/progenitor cells or by transdifferentiation from other differentiated cells in certain conditions. Facultative stem/progenitor cells might be generated from mature differentiated cells by dedifferentiation.
