Epworth Sleepiness Scale score of the patient
| | |
| Chance of dozing (0–3) | |
| 0 = would never doze off | |
| 1 = slight chance of dozing | |
| 2 = moderate chance of dozing | |
| 3 = high chance of dozing | |
| | |
| Sitting and reading | 1 |
| Watching TV | 1 |
| Sitting, inactive, in a public place (e.g., a theater or a meeting) | 2 |
| As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break | 2 |
| Lying down to rest in the afternoon when circumstances permit | 3 |
| Sitting and talking to someone | 0 |
| Sitting quietly after a lunch without alcohol | 2 |
| In a car that is stopped for a few minutes in traffic | 2 |
*A total score of 0–9 is normal, 10–15 is considered sleepy, and ≥ 16 is considered very sleepy.
Figure 1An overnight summary view of polysomnography of the case shows respiratory events, arousals, desaturation events, arterial oxygen saturation, and sleep stages. The sleep study revealed an AHI score of 84.3 and lowest oxygen saturation of 70%, which is consistent with a diagnosis of severe obstructive sleep apnea with desaturation. SaO2 = arterial oxygen saturation, AHI = apnea hypopnea index, Mvt = movement, W = waking state R = rapid eye movement sleep, and N1, N2, and N3 = non-REM sleep stages.
