Abstract
This article reviews the pathophysiology of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, and the impact of hypothermia as neuroprotection in the clinical setting. The results of trials performed in well resourced and mid and low resourced countries is presented. Infant and childhood outcome following hypothermia is provided. Biomarkers of outcome that are clinical, electrophysiological and imaging which will be helpful to clinicians are noted. Management of infants with encephalopathy, including safety of hypothermia is reviewed. The article concludes with knowledge gaps in neuroprotection and the future of hypothermia therapy.Entities:
