Abstract
BACKGROUND: Physical activity has well-established positive health-related effects. Sedentary behaviour has been associated with postoperative complications and mortality after cardiac surgery. Patients undergoing cardiac surgery often suffer from impaired lung function postoperatively. The association between physical activity and lung function in cardiac surgery patients has not previously been reported.Entities:

A four-category scale for assessment of self-reported physical activity during the last month
| Sedentary | You spend most of your time sedentary. You walk or are active in some other way for less than 2 hours per week. |
| Moderate activity | You walk or are active in some other way for at least 2 hours per week, usually without sweating. |
| Moderate regular exercise | You exercise regularly 1–2 times per week, at least 30 minutes per time, with activity that causes you to sweat. |
| Regular activity and exercise | You exercise regularly at least 3 times per week, at least 30 minutes per time, with activity that causes you to sweat. |
The categorical question was answered preoperatively and two months after cardiac surgery.

Data are presented as mean ± SD (95% CI of the difference). The two months values are expressed as percentages of preoperative values. P-value refers to the difference between sedentary/less active (n = 53) and active patients (n = 230), *indicates significant differences (p < 0.05).
