Abstract
BACKGROUND: Numerous studies tried to find new markers that after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation predict engraftment earlier than the conventional marker, absolute neutrophil count (ANC >500/µL). Early engraftment prediction can be achieved by a marker that reflects the release of neutrophils and monocytes into the leukopenic peripheral blood.Entities:

Patient characteristics and graft data
*Primary neuroectodermal tumor and neuroblastoma.
Abbreviations: HSCT, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation; MM, multiple myeloma; AA, aplastic anemia; PRCA, pure red cell aplasia; FA, Fanconi's anemia; TBI, total body irradiation; Ara-C, Cytosine arabinoside, Arabinosylcytosine; BM, bone marrow; PB, peripheral blood; MSD, matched-sibling donor; MUD, matched unrelated donor.
Fig. 1Means of (A) MNV & MNC (N=74) and (B) MMV & MMC (N=45) after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), with day 0 signifying the day when each patient's engraftment was identified by NEUTRO or MONO.
Abbreviations: CPD, cell population data; MNV, mean-volume-neutrophils; MNC, mean-conductivity-neutrophils; MMV, mean-volume-monocytes; MMC, mean-conductivity-monocytes; NEUTRO, a neutrophilic engraftment marker; MONO, a monocytic engraftment marker.
Fig. 2Engraftment days achieved with NEUTRO and MONO along with ANC after HSCT in 2 cases, which showed successful engraftment. Asterisk denotes the engraftment day detected by each marker. (A) Case 61 showed successful engraftment using NEUTRO, MNV >185 & MNC <150, on D9 (3 days earlier than ANC). (B) Case 44 showed successful engraftment using MONO, MMV >190 & MMC <130, on D7 (6 days earlier than ANC). A noticeable pattern emerged; when values for MNV and MMV peaked, those for MNC and MMC notched.
Abbreviations: MNV, mean-volume-neutrophils; MNC, mean-conductivity-neutrophils; ANC, absolute neutrophil count; CPD, cell population data; NEUTRO, a neutrophilic engraftment marker; MONO, a monocytic engraftment marker; HSCT, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation; MMV, mean-volume-monocytes; MMC, mean-conductivity-monocytes
Engraftment days according to ANC, NEUTRO, and MONO on the basis of graft type
Units are days in mean±SD (N). Numbers in bold signify significant differences between allogeneic and autologous HSCT groups (P<0.05).
*Difference in marker detection days for each case; †absolute neutrophil count (ANC>500/µL); ‡neutrophil marker (MNV >185 and MNC <150); §monocyte marker (MMV >190 and MMC <130); ∥Two cases of donor granulocyte infusion were excluded.
Abbreviations: ANC, absolute neutrophil count; NEUTRO, a neutrophilic engraftment marker; MONO, a monocytic engraftment marker.
