Abstract
BACKGROUND: Fatigue is common in Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Data on fatigue in newly diagnosed patients are unavailable. AIM: To report prevalence of fatigue in newly diagnosed CD and UC patients and examine its association with health-related quality of life (HRQOL), depression and disability.Entities:

Figure 1Work productivity and activity impairment (WPAI) according to fatigue status among patients with newly diagnosed (a) Crohn's disease and (b) ulcerative colitis. Only employed patients (CD: 83/125; UC: 66/90) considered for the first three items of the WPAI (absenteeism, presenteeism, overall work impairment). All patients (CD 125; UC 90), including unemployed patients, were considered for the fourth item of the WPAI (daily activity impairment). Two employed CD patients did not complete absenteeism questions. *P < 0.01 for difference between patients with fatigue vs. no fatigue. **P < 0.001 for difference between patients with fatigue vs. no fatigue.
