A quality improvement case report: an institution's experience in pursuing excellence in parenteral nutrition safety.

Lauren M Hudson1, Joseph I Boullata.

Abstract

The medication-use process surrounding parenteral nutrition (PN) is complex and associated with safety concerns. Standardization and communication throughout the PN-use process are a valued risk management strategy. Regardless of an organization's current policies, procedures, and practices, further improvements in the PN-use process are always possible. This takes concerted effort, collaboration, and time but is within the reach of any organization. A case report of one institution's quality improvement initiative in the PN-use process is described.
