Abstract

Effective Classroom Management (ECM), an affective development course, was provided to fifth grade teachers. Teachers were taught techniques in communication, classroom management, and self-esteem enhancement to make classroom environments more responsive to students' affective and cognitive needs. Schools were matched and one school from each pair was randomly assigned to either the experimental or control condition. There were 11 experimental and 11 control classes. Teachers in seven of the experimental classes completed the training. No predicted treatment effects on teachers or students were found. Discussion is in terms of generic approaches of primary prevention.
