Abstract
BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous in soil and water. Most NTM cause disease in humans only rarely unless some aspect of host defense is impaired. Recently, rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) is not uncommon, and the prevalence of RGM infection has been increasing. RGM causes a wide spectrum of pulmonary and extrapulmonary diseases and has been shown as an important source for opportunistic infection.Entities:

Baseline characteristics of 26 patients with for rapidly growing mycobacterium skin and soft tissue infection (n=26)
SD, standard deviation; OP, operation; AFB, acid-fast bacilli; PCR, polymerase chain reaction; CLR, clarithromycin; AMK, amikacin; CIP, ciprofloxacin, wks, weeks.
aPatients with taking steroid were adrenal insufficiency, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, rheumatic arthritis, and recurrent joint injection.
bMedical procedures were liposuction, fat grafting, filler injection, articular injection, and acupuncture.
Clinical characteristics and outcome of patients with skin and subcutaneous infection due to rapidly growing mycobacteria in Jeju
Pt, patient; M, male; F, female; DM, diabetes mellitus; CKD, chronic kidney disease; LV, Livedo vasculitis; AI, adreanl insufficiency; AFB, acid-fast bacilli; AMK, amikacin; CLR, clarithromycin; CIP, ciprofloxacin; CFX, cefoxitin; RFP, rifampicin; MOX, moxifloxacin; DOX, doxycycline.
aPublic bath.
bPatients developed drug eruption for cefoxitin and changed to imipenem.

Figure 2(A) Marked chronic inflammatory cell infiltrates along perivascular spaces in the reticular dermis (black arrow; H&E, ×100). (B) Diffuse granulomatous inflammation of the dermis. The infiltrated cells are composed of lymphocyte, neutrophils, histiocyte and foreign body-type multinucleated giant cells (black arrow; H&E, ×200).
Results of antimicrobial susceptibility testa
Sus, susceptible; I, intermediate; R, resistant; IR, inducible resistant; MIC, minimum inhibitory concentration; SMX/TMP, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim.
aAntimicrobial susceptibility test was not done in case-1 patient.
Figure 3Contrast enhanced T1 weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the left shoulder at the initiation of treatment showed synovial thickening with high signal intensity (arrow) and fluid collection in the synovium (arrow head).
