Abstract
Invasive carcinoid tumor of the urinary bladder in a sixty-five-year-old man who presented with painless gross hematuria was documented by light and electron microscopic studies. The presence of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and absence of vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) was determined in the neoplastic tissue by chemical analysis. This was consistent with the findings of elevated 5-HIAA and normal VMA in the twenty-four-hour urine sample. Sections of the tumor yielded negative argentaffin and argyrophil reactions.
