New concepts in vocal fold imaging: a review.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To review new imaging technology potentially useful in the clinical practice of laryngology. HYPOTHESIS: Narrow band imaging, iScan (Pentax Medical Company, Montvale, NJ), optical computed tomography, and confocal microscopy have potential value for enhancing diagnosis of laryngeal pathology.
DESIGN: Literature review.
METHODS: Literature search of computer databases including MEDLINE and PubMed.
RESULTS: A review of 50 articles suggests that new imaging technologies may enhance clinical diagnostic capabilities.
CONCLUSION: The probable value of new imaging technologies suggests that further research is needed to refine these technologies and define their clinical efficacy.
