Abstract
Influence of iron-depletion on twitching motility and quorum sensing (QS) system in P. aeruginosa was evaluated. The results demonstrated iron-depletion can retard biofilm formation and increase the twitching motility and expression of QS-related genes, suggesting a potential interaction between twitching motility and QS system in P. aeruginosa biofilm formation.Entities:

Figure 1Comparison of biofilm formation under normal (without DPD), iron-depletion (with 500μM DPD) and partial iron-depletion (with 500μM DPD and 25μM FeCl3) conditions. The bars represent the means for the 3 tests, and the error bars represent the standard errors of the means. One-factor analysis of variance was conducted. * means P<0.05, **means P<0.01, both as compared with the same strain in normal condition; # means P<0.05, as compared with PAO1 in normal condition.
Figure 2Expression of lasR (a) and rhlR (b) genes in PAO1 and PAO-ΔpilHIJK stain under normal (without DPD) and iron-depletion (with 500μM DPD) conditions. ** means P<0.01, as compared with the same strain in normal condition.
