The importance of the identification of ankyloglossia (short lingual frenulum) as a cause of breastfeeding problems.

G E Notestine.

Abstract

The short lingual frenulum can be a cause of breastfeeding problems, including sore and damaged nipples and inadequate feedings. This article describes two cases, discusses the difficulty in recognizing the condition, and describes the role of primary care providers in the recognition, diagnosis, and surgical treatment of the short lingual frenulum.
