Abstract
BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity and overweight are two known risk factors for postmenopausal breast cancer. Former exercise intervention studies showed that physical activity influences sex hormone levels, known to be related to postmenopausal breast cancer, mainly when concordant loss of body weight was achieved. The question remains whether there is an additional beneficial effect of physical activity when weight loss is reached.Entities:

SHAPE-2 study inclusion and exclusion criteria

| 50-69 years of age | Use of beta-blockers or oral corticosteroids |
| Postmenopausal (last menses >12 months) | Smoking |
| Body mass index (BMI) 25–35 m/kg2 | Alcohol or drug abuse |
| Sedentary lifestyle (<2 hours/week of at least moderately intensive activities (≥4 MET)) | Diagnosed with breast cancer (present or history) |
| Willing to be randomly assigned to one of the three study arms | Diagnosed with other cancer (present or <5 years of history), except fornon-melanoma skin cancer |
