FIG. 1.Insulin triggers carotid chemoreceptor activation in animal models and subsequent increases in sympathetic outflow, which potentially contributes to insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, and further activation of the carotid chemoreceptors. Thus, inhibition of chemoreceptor activation may be a viable treatment option for diseases with sustained hyperinsulinemia and sympathoexcitation.
