Abstract
BACKGROUND: For the pending National Claims Database in Japan, researchers will not have access to death information in the enrollment files. We developed and evaluated a claims-based definition of death. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPALEntities:

‘Zombie’ claims are the claims without ‘death’ issued after the index claim with ‘death’ given as the discharge/disease status.
Information on death in enrollment file provided by insurers was considered to be the gold standard information.
