Plants on the left were inoculated with buffer only, plants are the right were infected with Cucumber mosaic virus. Plants were subjected to sub-freezing temperatures at night, to mimic conditions at the beginning or end of a growing season. Virus infected plants survived the cold treatment, whereas uninfected controls died.
