Abstract
BACKGROUND: An altered gut microbiota composition has recently been linked to obesity. The principal aim of this study is to investigate and compare the gut microbiota composition in obese and lean children. Secondly, associations between analysed gut bacterial species, dietary compounds, energy intake and biochemical blood parameters are evaluated.Entities:

O/O: obese group; C: control group; BMI SDS: body mass index standard deviation score. *Significant differences with p value < 0.05.
Figure 1Differences in bacterial genera between O/O and C group. A: Differences in bacterial genera between O/O and C detected by quantitative plating. B: Differences in relative proportions of Bacteroides fragilis group species between O/O and C detected by MALDI-TOF MS. C: Differences in bacterial genera between O/O and C detected by qPCR. Data of quantitative plating and qPCR are expressed as mean log10 cells/g of faeces. Data of MALDI-TOF MS are reported in percentages (%). O/O: obese group; C: control group. Error bars 95% CI. **p = 0.004. *p = 0.04.
Figure 2Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratio of O/O versus C children. O/O: obese group; C: control group. *p = 0.007.
