[Significance of predialysis preparation and patient information in choosing the dialysis method].

Karl Lhotta1.

Abstract

Every patient has the right for objective information on all therapeutic options for his disease. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are equally effective in the treatment of end-stage renal disease. Patients without contraindications who are suitable for both options should receive a balanced education to enable them to select their treatment modality. Any information needs to be unbiased, clearly structured and should be provided by a multidisciplinary team. Extensive information increases the proportion of patients who will opt for peritoneal dialysis. In the future, predialysis education and management should be offered to all patients with advanced chronic kidney disease.
