Abstract
BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance spectroscopy allows for the noninvasive study of brain metabolism and therefore may provide useful information about brain injuries. We examined the associations of brain metabolite ratios in very preterm infants with white matter lesions and overall health status at birth.Entities:

Figure 1Developmental trends in MRS data. (a) Voxel placement for MRS sequences. (b–h) Correlations between metabolite ratios and postmenstrual age at scan during the preterm and term periods, plotted with regression lines and 95% confidence bands (gray shaded area). *P < 0.05 after correction for multiple comparisons. CHO, glycerophosphocholine+ phosphocholine; CR, creatine+phosphocreatine; INS, myo-inositol; LAC, lactate; MRS, magnetic resonance spectroscopy; NAA, N-acetylaspartate+N-acetylaspartylglutamate.
Figure 2Sample (a) long and (b) short echo time spectra from a participant scanned at 34 wk gestation, with signal strength plotted in arbitrary units. The bold line represents the LCModel fit; two lighter lines represent the original spectrum and the smooth baseline calculated by LCModel.
