Abstract
BACKGROUND: The role of environmental factors in lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration (DD) in young adults is largely unknown. Therefore, we investigated whether body mass index (BMI), smoking, and physical activity are associated with lumbar DD among young adults.Entities:

Figure 1Flow-chart of the study population. The study population consisted of members of the 1986 Northern Finland Birth Cohort (NFBC 1986) in the two northernmost provinces of Finland (n = 9479). The study population comprised the 2969 subjects who lived within a radius of 100 km around of the city of Oulu in 2003. The participants of the physical examination were invited to lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which was performed at the mean age of 21.
