Gini coefficient values range from 0 to 1, where 0 indicates perfect equality (that is, all incomes are the same) and 1 indicates perfect inequality (that is, one person receives all of the income). Each quarter includes the following US states: 1 (Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin, Wyoming), 2 (Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington), 3 (Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, North Carolina, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia), 4 (Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, Tennessee, Texas).

†Metropolitan division: counties or group of counties with >2.5 million people. Metropolitan: core based statistical area of counties with at least one urbanized area of more than 50 000 people plus adjacent outlying counties having a high degree of social and economic integration with the central county or counties as measured through commuting.
