Abstract
BACKGROUND: Although evidence suggests that poor sleep is associated with chronic disease, little research has been conducted to assess the relationships between insufficient sleep, frequent mental distress (FMD ≥14 days during the past 30 days), obesity, and chronic disease including diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, asthma, and arthritis.Entities:

1Model 1: adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were obtained from separate multivariate logistic models that included days of insufficient sleep and age, sex, race/ethnicity, and education as covariates.
2Model 2: includes the covariates in model 1 plus frequent mental distress (FMD).
3Model 3: includes the covariates in model 1 plus categorical body mass index (BMI).
