Abstract
BACKGROUND: Tumor hypoxia is associated with malignant progression and treatment resistance. Hypoxia-related factors, such as carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX), glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) permit tumor cell adaptation to hypoxia. We attempted to elucidate the correlation of these markers with variable clinicopathological factors and overall prognosis.Entities:

Fig. 1Immunohistochemical staining for carbonic anhydrase IX in ovarian epithelial carcinoma. Highlighted are the perinecrotic patterns in mucinous (A) and endometrioid carcinoma (B).
Fig. 2Immunohistochemical staining for glucose transporter-1 in ovarian epithelial carcinoma. Highlighted are the perinecrotic patterns in clear cell (A) and serous carcinoma (B).

Correlation between CA IX expression and clinicopathological characteristics in ovarian epithelial carcinomas
Values are presented as number (%).
Low expression, less than 10% positive staining of tumor cells; high expression, more than 10% positive staining of tumor cells.

aStatistically significance (Pearson's chi-squared test).
Correlation between GLUT-1 expression and clinicopathological characteristics in ovarian epithelial carcinomas
Values are presented as number (%).
Low expression, less than 10% positive staining of tumor cells; high expression, more than 10% positive staining of tumor cells.

Fig. 4Association of immunohistochemical staining for carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX), glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) with overall survival of patients. (A) The Kaplan-Meier survival curves show significantly poor prognosis in patients with high expression of CA IX and GLUT-1 (p=0.040). (B) Both high expression of CA IX and VEGF (p=0.025). (C) Both high expression of GLUT-1 and VEGF (p=0.005). (D) High expression of all three: CA IX, GLUT-1, and VEGF (p=0.004).
