A review of patient education in nursing.

S Kruger.

Abstract

Patient education by nurses makes a substantial contribution to patients' health and wellness. Nursing studies document patient benefits resulting from patient education. Studies indicate that some patients have fewer symptoms from their illnesses after patient education, whereas other chronically ill patients experience fewer hospitalizations. To date, most benefits have been empirically observed rather than scientifically documented. To determine the extent to which patient education contributes to health improvement, studies need to focus on measurable long-term benefits that can be translated into cost-effectiveness. Nurses are encouraged to demonstrate the value of patient education with documentation of its effects on patient health.
