Abstract
BACKGROUND: The proportions of preterm birth (PTB, ie., delivered before 37 gestational weeks) and low birth weight (LBW, ie., birth weight less than 2500 g at delivery) have been rising in developed countries. We sought to examine the factors contributing to the rise in Japan, with particular focus on the effects of obstetric interventions.Entities:

*Sum of medically indicated PTB and spontaneous PTB may not equal PTB less than 37 weeks because of missing data for delivery or induction variables.
†Body mass index was calculated as body weight (kg) divided by height squared (m2).
‡Ex-smoker included mothers who quit smoking during pregnancy.
§Obtained by the chi-square test or analysis of variance.
