Henry Minardi1.

Abstract

AIM: To develop a valid and reliable research instrument displaying six basic emotions represented by three ethnic groups (Asian, white British, and black African-Caribbean) and both genders, to assess ability to identify emotions from non-verbal displays.
METHOD: A DVD was made by professional actors. Validity was assessed using two panels of qualified and practising health practitioners in mental health. Reliability was assessed using Cohen's kappa.
FINDINGS: The instrument was found to be a valid representation of the six basic emotions and a reliable tool to assess emotion recognition.
CONCLUSION: A new research instrument has been produced to assess participants' ability to identify correctly emotions displayed by non-verbal communication.
